Mason’s first week of his helmet was kind of brutal. Not for him, he really didn’t care either way. They had mentioned that the skin could get irritated because it is adjusting but it wasn’t supposed to get that bad. There was a break in wearing schedule to follow. For the first day he wore it for an hour then off an hour, etc. Over the course of 4 days it progressed with wearing it longer and into the night. Everytime I took it off, his forehead was red. It was supposed to resolve within the 30min breaks but it didn’t. Then one day it even got rashy. I felt discouraged. I’m trying so hard to help him yet it’s just not working. They suggested starting the break in wearing schedule all over again. I really didn’t think that was going to do much help but it actually did! Somehow with starting over and breaking it in again, his head got used to it. Now, he wears it 22-23 hours a day and gets a couple breaks of a half hour each during the day. During the breaks, I wipe it down with a washcloth to keep it clean. He also goes in every 2 weeks to get it refit and adjusted accordingly. The first time, he had to get an entirely new helmet because the first one was too small from his head growing so quickly. They also added some more ventilation because he is such a hot body. He just recently had another fitting and his head has grown 15mm since his original evaluation! That might not sound like a lot but they said that that is quite a bit actually. He is a growing boy! I can definitely tell that the helmet is helping though. Before, his head was very visibly flat. Now, it is still flat but not as bad and the overall shape of his head is on the right track. It is so reassuring to see the progress. He also goes to physical therapy every 2 weeks. In physical therapy, we go over some stretches to help with his torticollis and overall neck muscles. We need to keep up with the stretches and do them at least once a day. It doesn’t seem that difficult but man, somehow this kid has me all over the place busy! All in all, I’m just a Mom just trying to do the best for my kid. That’s all.

And for now,

Xoxo
